Avalon Ard Ri L1-320 Satin Natural 2014 Jumbo Electro-Acoustic Guitar

This is an Avalon Ard Ri L1-320 Jumbo Electro-Acoustic Guitar in Satin Natural finish. Handmade in the Northern Ireland Newtownards factory, this guitar is part of Avalon’s flagship ‘Ard Ri’ line, which replaced the previous ‘Legacy’ range in 2013. Avalon Guitars was originally founded as The Lowden Guitar Co. in 1989 after purchasing the purpose-built factory, staff and assets of Lowden from receivership. Whilst distinct from Lowden, Avalon guitars- especially those made in the Newtownards factory- share Lowden’s fantastic build quality and excellent reputation amongst players.

The Ard Ri line is the pinnacle of Avalon’s offerings, and as such, this instrument features an impressive selection of tonewoods. Of course, an all-solid construction is employed and comprises a Red Cedar top, Indian Rosewood back & sides, 20 fret Ebony fingerboard and matching bridge. The body is double-bound with Sycamore, as well as multi-stripe purfling & an Abalone rosette adorning the top.

The Mahogany neck plays beautifully, with a profile which could be described as a moderately-sized ‘C’ shape. This fills the hand for a substantial and confidence-inspiring grip whilst remaining slim enough for tricky chord voicings and articulate melodic playing. Certainly, the neck is practical for a wide range of playing styles and techniques; feeling well suited to chord playing, melodic lines and fingerpicking patterns alike. The Ebony of the fingerboard is nice and dark in appearance, and along with its supremely tight grain provides a smooth, durable and luxurious playing surface. The Jumbo body shape feels great in the arms, ensuring comfort in both standing and seated positions.

The acoustic voice of the Ard Ri L1-320 is rich and warm, and provides a surprising amount of balance for a jumbo-bodied acoustic. Lows are warm without being too soft, retaining plenty of accuracy. The midrange is tight and punchy, helping to easily cut through a mix when playing as part of an ensemble. The treble response is bright and shimmering, adding a sparkle to every note played on the instrument thanks to the Red Cedar top. One real standout feature of this instrument is the sheer amount of sustain it achieves, with notes and chords ringing out with beautiful crystalline clarity. The Indian Rosewood back and sides add depth and richness to the sound, working in conjunction with the Jumbo body design to deliver a warm bass response and clear mid range. The after-market Fishman Soundhole pickup system does a fantastic job of conveying the acoustic voice of the instrument in recording and live situations, meaning this guitar is ready for wherever the gig takes you.
